Artist statement
Coming from the fields of communications, media, and design, Jean-Guy Turgeon gradually developed an artistic practice alongside his professional career. It was only from 2018 onward that this practice began to occupy an increasingly significant place in his activities.
Through the prism of his autism, Turgeon’s work engages in an exploration of universal themes such as isolation, rejection, and alienation, while also probing the particular vulnerabilities experienced by neurodiverse individuals. Through an introspective and singular aesthetic, his creations reveal the layers of complexity and nuance that shape these often overlooked experiences—drawn from his own lived reality as well as those of neurodivergent models and collaborators who at times play an active role in the creative process.
While photography remains Turgeon’s primary medium, his practice extends to video and digital art. His approach seeks to capture states of consciousness, feeling, or emotion within a suspended temporality, where images crystallize moments that are both evocative and filled with meaning. Infused with symbolist resonances, this practice is distinguished by compositions marked by a liminality that frequently evokes dreamlike atmospheres—symbolist, expressionist, and at times even surrealist.
Through the use of diverse visual techniques such as frozen motion, motion blur, multiple exposure, superimposition, and solarization, Turgeon offers perceptions of the world shaped by neurodiverse conditions. Through these visual explorations, he invites viewers to reflect on the complexity of lived experiences that exist beyond neurotypical norms, revealing a singular and often overlooked sensibility rooted in otherness.
His most recent series, Superposed States, aims to reveal the potentiality that exists between multiple states in moments of imbalance, capturing the instant of all possibilities. In the previous series, Strangers, he exposes the masks of normality that conceal unanticipated crises—morbid collapses unfolding in the shadows.
